the length of a rectangle is 1cm longer than its width. If the diagonal of the rectangle is 4cm, what are the dimensions (the length and the width) of the rectangle

Pick a variable for the width. Write an expression, in terms of this variable, for the length. Then plug the variable, the expression, and "4" into the Pythagorean Theorem, and solve.
