This is my first post. I hope I am doing this correctly. Please advise. TKU, Zach

I have the shape of (an upside down) letter "T". The horizontal LINE has points T, R and S. The vertical RAY extends from R and has point X on it.

Given: Angle TRS is a straight angle
Angle TRX is a right angle
measure (m) of angle TRS = 2x + 5y
measure (m) of angle XRS = 3x + 3y

Solve for x and y.
Please explain.

I'm going to guess that your picture looks something like this:

Code:
          | X
          |
        __|
       | | 3x + 3y
---------------------
T R S
What is the "angle measure" of any straight line? So what is "2x + 5y" equal to? Set this expression equal to that angle measure. This is your first equation.

What is the angle measure of any right angle? So what is "3x + 3y" equal to? Set this expression equal to that angle measure. This is your second equation.

There are many ways to solve systems of equations. In this case, though, it would probably be simplest first to divide the second equation by 3. Then use either substitution or addition.

If you get stuck, please reply showing how far you gave gotten in working through the above instructions. Thank you.

Eliz.
