graphing functions: x + 2y = 8

:? i'm confused I know you need to solve by substituting. Here's the problem:

x+2y=8

Which should I substitute? Does it have to be the x or the y?

No, it does not "have" to be the x or the y. You can pick. However, picking values for x and solving for y is the more usual method. (That's why they used that method in your book and in class.)

Make sure you pick enough points (either more than three, or else not right next to each other) to get a solid base for the graph of this straight line.
