For certain years from 1950 to 1990, the average annual per capita consumption C of cigaretts by Americans (18 and older) can be modeled by C=3248.89+108.64t-2.98t^2 for 0≤t≤40, where t is the year, with t=0 corresponding to 1950.

a) In 1960, the U.S population (18 and over) was 116,530,000. Of those, about 48,500,000 were smokers. What was the average annual consumption per smoker in 1960? What was the average daily cigarette consumption per smoker?
Think your way through it, one step at a time.

Formula for Avg Annual per capita consumption

C(t)=3248.89+108.64t-2.98t^2 for 0≤t≤40 and t = 0 means 1950

Total Population

116,530,000

Total Smokers

48,500,000 ==> Almost 42%!!!! But no one asked for that.

"What was the average annual consumption per smoker in 1960?"

Symbolically, we have:

Total Cigs Smoked by Total Population = C(10)*116,530,000

Total Cigs Smoked per smoker = C(10)*116,530,000/48,500,000

"What was the average daily cigarette consumption per smoker?"

(C(10)*116,530,000/48,500,000) / 365

Just put them together as they are requested. No need to try to solve everything at once.

It sounds, in your post, as though you're replying to somebody, but yours is the original post in the thread...? Are you wanting us to check your work on a solution you're planning to turn in...? Was the assignment to "write the solution as though you're explaining to a fellow student"...?

Please reply with clarification. Thank you.

Eliz.

it seems as if someone helped me through the problem in my post? well thanks to that person because i finally figured it out, thankyou so much :D

I think some dope hit "Edit" instead of "Quote" -- again! I wondered why I had to put the quote tags back in. Obviously, I didn't wonder enough. Sorry about that.
