I need help setting up this word problem,

Kay wants a rectangular area in the greenhouse reserved for African Violets. She says the width of the area must be one foot less than the length. She also tells me the area must be atleast 12 sq ft. What widths would satify Kay's requirements?

What should be the first step? How should I set up this equation?

area of rectangle = width times length.
L = length; then width = L-1 : got that?

So area = L(L - 1) : can you finish ?
