It depends on whether you insert "and" in "one hundred one". I usually don't. In some countries teachers would say it shouldn't be used, but in others they might say it is needed.

Yes, so do I. Note the use of the hyphen.

But I have learnt something today. Apparently, according to Wikipedia, 101 can be said both ways. I have just never heard it spoken, or seen it written, without the "and".

So, apparently there are two possible acceptable answers to my puzzle, 101 or 1000.

Unless you can't spell, then the answer might be 8 (ate). ?

Another thing I learnt recently, in my Beginner French class, is how to count in French.

Did you know that 90 in French is "quatre-vingt-dix" which translates basically to "four twenty (and) ten"? I found that fascinating!

I think you should add "in American English," because the standard answer is
"one thousand" when it is spelled out.
