Margaret is a triathlete but considering specializing in one discipline: cycling, swimming or running. She knows her individual split times for each part of the last event sheparticipated in. How would knowing the means and standard deviations of all the other
competitors in each discipline help her make her decision?

i know that she can use the z test to kind of find where abouts everyone elce stands withthere scores and how they will perfom but im not sure if im right

That is fine, but it does not answer the question.

Perhaps you do not understand the question. It appears that Miss Maggie is considering giving up the triathlon in favor of just one of the race varieties. Which one should she pick? How might she use the statistical information to make such a decision?

Possible Criteria:
----- I like this one best.
----- People think this race is cooler.
----- I'm closest to World Class in this event.
----- I'm middle of the pack in these two, but top 10% in this one.
----- My grandfather always wanted a swimmer in the family.
----- Various others.
