In D, I am subtracting the shaded area from the entire "rectangle" between [1,2] with respect to y. Essentially, I take the entire area (6)2 minus the shaded region's area (y2)2

If f'(x) is positive, f(x) is increasing; if f'(x) is negative, f(x) is decreasing. Very simple.
Therefore, f(x) is decreasing [3,5] because f'(x) is negative [3,5].
