I am starting a new topic in algebra called rearranging formulas, I have no idea as to how to answer the questions.

The instructions are as follows:
Solve each formula for the variable indicated

1. A=lw, w
2. A=1/2bh. h
etc.

Could someone explain to me how to do these
Thanks.

What have you tried?

The idea is to isolate the indicated variable, like "A" in both examples above. How is 'l' attached to 'w' in the first one? Multiplication. Use division to separate them.

Treat everything but the variable you want like a number. For instance:

. . . . .6 = 3w
. . . . .6/3 = (3w)/3
. . . . .2 = w

. . . . .A = Lw
. . . . .A/L = (Lw)/L
. . . . .A/L = w

The process is the same; the only difference is that you can't simplify as much along the way.

Im still not understanding this at all.

I havent tried anything, Im more or less puzzled as to how Im supposed to solve something that has no numbers.

The first question is

A=lw, w(w is the variable I have to find)
and the answer is
Code:
W = A
    --
    1

edit: code tags added

Add code tags to get things to line up.

A = W*L

Divide by L

A/L = W*L/L

L/L = 1 so A/L = W(1) = W

...no idea? Was the teacher absent?
