is this correct?

3^2a^8 b^4
3^0a^5b^9

=(3^2/3^0)(a^8-5)(b^4-9)

=3a^3b^-5
Your notation needs work.

a^8-5 = a8 - 5 -- Is that what you mean? I'm guessing it is not. You knew what you meant (a8-5), and I guessed what you meant, but there is only benefit from adding parenthese to separate a few things.

Also, 32 = 9

This is what I meant;

3^2a^8b^4
3^0a^5b^9

=(3^2/3^0)(a^8^-5)(b^4^-9)

=3a^3b^-5

I coud not see the rest of your problem

3^2a^8b^4
3^0a^5b^9

=(3^2/3^0)(a^8^-5)(b^4^-9)

try this...

= (3^2 /3^0) ( a^8 /a^5) (b^4 /b^9)

=(3^2/1) ( a^8 . a^-5) (b^4 . b^-9)

= 9 a^3 b^-5

=9 a^3 /(b^5)

What does that symbol mean? (^)
The carat symbol is customarily used to indicate exponentiation. For further information on textual formatting of mathematical statements, please review Karl's Notes on the topic.

Thank you.
