factoring out 2

While we are at it, I have another one.

-2x-4 over
x^2+5x+6

-2(x+2x)
I am having problems with the lower one because they have nothing in common.

Check: does 2(x+2x) expand to give -2x-4?
What is the common factor in -2x-4? Why not try -2.

Let's have one last go, except this time I'll put a smiley with it:

Have a go at factorising the quadratic in the denominator.

I did use -2 ha! :)

Okay, in my defense I typed this problem at the same time I typed the other one so I didn't read your memo again. But, like I said after three times the information sticks so I will go work on that right now!

OHHHH I get it. It wasn't the -2 you were questioning it was the x.

so i have x^2+5x+6

looking at term c like you told me I know that 2*3 is 6 AND when added =5 which is my term b. That will work

(x+2)(x+3) Checked it using FOIL x^2+3x+2x+6 HA!
And I have -2(x+2) checked using FOIL -2x-4 which is right.

I can cancel out the x+2 which leaves me with (x+3)over -2 Right?

You guys/girls are the best thing going on the net. Unbelievable.

I can cancel out the x+2 which leaves me with (x+3)over -2 Right?
um.. pretty much (just check if you have it the right way around ).

Great stuff!

I did notice that I flipped them. Thank you so much. I honestly can't tell you how much I appreciate the help.
