how do i solve fraction equations with positive and negative numbers

-1/8+x=4/8

2/3=x+1/6[/list]

-1/8+x=4/8
Multiply by the LCD (8)
-1+8x=4

2/3=x+1/6
Multiply by the LCD (6)
4=6x+1

-1/8+x=4/8

You follow the same procedure as usual. For this first problem, you would add 1/8 to both sides of the equation using normal adding of fractions.

x -1/8 + 1/8 = 4/8 + 1/8 = .....

2/3=x+1/6
In this second problem, since x had 1/6 added to it to get 2/3, undo that by subtracting 1/6 from both sides of the equation.

2/3 - 1/6 = x + 1/6 - 1/6

Racheal, please do NOT piggyback on someone elses thread. Start your own by posting a new subject.
I assume you are solving, not simplifying.
2x+4y=10 2x+3y=18
Subtract the second from the first.
y = -8
Substitute in either one.
2x+3(-8)=18
2x=42
x=21
Check by substitutibg both answers in the other equation.
2(21)+4(-8) =
42-32 = 10
It works!
