Just can't seem to see what I'm doing wrong here

3d-11/4=3/2

those are fractions, I just dont know how to make fractions on here

my solution so far

4(3d) - 4(11/4) = 4(3/2)

12d - 11 = 6

12d -11 +11 = 6 + 11

12d = 17

12d/12 = 17/12

any help would be appreciated

On what basis do you think that "d = 17/12" is incorrect?

Thank you.

Eliz.

to verify

left side

3(17/12)-11/4

51/12-11/4

18/1

right side

3/2

maybe this is the part im doing wrong

First, why turn (3/1)(17/12) into 51/12, when you could simplify and turn it into 17/4...?

Second, how are you getting that 51/12 - 11/4 equals 18...?

I could be missing something, of course....

Eliz.

Ok this is how i worked mine out

3(17/12)-11/4

3/1*17/12-11/4
since 3 is a whole number do you not put in on top of the 1?

which gives 51/12-11/4

then to subtract dont you need a common denominator?

51/12-33/12

18/1

i know im doing this wrong somewhere, i just cant see it. Very frustrating because i can see how your leading me to the right answer but dont know how your simplifying.

\(\displaystyle \L \mbox{ \frac{51}{12} - \frac{33}{12} = \frac{51 - 33}{12} = \frac{18}{12} = \frac{3}{2}}\)

Maybe note that going with \(\displaystyle \mbox{ 3 \cdot \frac{17}{12} = \frac{17}{4}}\) would have been a little bit more convenient.

Thank you very much Unco and everyone. The light has come on I thought that when you substracted the fraction the denominator disappeared.
