:shock: please help. i have a couple of problems I can't figure out.

the difference of two numbers is 3. their product is 16. which equation can be used to find the two numbers?
A x2 + 6x = 16
B x2 - 3x + 16 = 0
C x2 + 3x = 16
D x2 - 3x - 16 = 0

Let the smaller number be x.

The bigger number must be 3 greater than this: x + 3.

Now, their product is 16 . . .

Everything is relative. Which part is not sinking in (please don't say everything)?

WHY do you not understand?
You were told by Uncle Unco to multiply (x+3) by x : can you not do that?

In the future you may want to indicate exponents by using ^, e.g. x^2.

You've already received significant help and finding the answer should be easy now. Telling you the answer outright will not help you if you don't understand the process.

I understand that there is a correct choice for this MC problem. But otherwise the problem makes no sense. There are no digits that meet the criteria. Can you see any?

BUT digits (or integers) are not specified.
x = (-3 +- sqrt(73)) / 2 is perfectly valid.
