if a certain number is added to 36, the result is the same as if the number were multiplied by 4. what is the number?
could someone explain this step by step... thanks

problem

Okay, if I understand the problem right, then letting x be the number, then x+36=4x. Subtract x from both sides, gives you 36=3x. Divide each side by 3, gives you x= 12.
So, number is 12.

1--If a certain number "x" is added to 36 we get x + 36
2--The result is the same as if the number "x" were multilied by 4 or 4x
3--Therefore, x + 36 = 4x

I suspectr you can take it from here.
