Factoring Polynomials

Are the instructions really to "factor"? Not to "simplify"?

Try this: write both numerator and denominator as a product of factors.


2*2*2*2*2*a*b*b*b*b
---------------------------
2*2*2*3*a*a*a*a*b


Now, divide out any factors that are common to both numerator and denominator. After you do a number of problems this "baby-talk" way, you will probably discover some shortcuts (which I'll bet you've covered already as the Laws of Exponents).
