I am so confused, and my mother accidentally threw out the paper needed to complete this study.
Okay, so here's the problem --

You follow the same process as in long division with numbers. How many times does a go into a²? 'a' times. Put a on top above the a². Next, multiply 'a' times the a+5, and write the product under the problem's 'a² - a'.

Change signs of your expression and then add to the a² - a (as in long division you "subtract"; then bring down the next term and repeat the process.

So polynomial long division wasn't covered in class...? The lesson was instead handed out for self-study at home...?

Since we can't really teach classes here, please use the following online resources instead:

. . . . .Wikipedia: Polynomial Long Division

. . . . .Karl's Calculus Tutor: Polynomial Long Division

. . . . .WTAMU: Polynomial Long Division

. . . . .Polynomial Long Division

Once you have learned the basic technique for polynomial long division (which, you will discover, works just as the tutor said), please re-attempt the exercise. If you get stuck, please reply showing (or describing) your steps.

Thank you.

Eliz.
