54/6 = 9 -- Hey! 9 is a perfect square.
 
For any factoring problem, you always try to first factor out a common factor in all the terms. For this problem:

there is a factor of 6 common to each term so:

6(x^2 - 9)

In the parentheses you have the difference between two squares, which factors:

6(x + 3)(x - 3)
