Could anyone help me determing what's the quickest was to solve for?
x, y, z

if I have the following expression.

x^2 = y^2 + z^2

... and the only value I have is x^2 = 0.3

Not enough info. BTW, you evaluate an expression. You solve an equation.

The way you've worded that, limitless solutions, like:

y^2 = .1, z^2 = .2 or y^2 = .2, z^2 = .1

y^2 = x^2 = .15
