How to figure out what plus 2, times three, equals ten?

I need help figuring out what plus 2, times three, equals ten. And what plus 2, times 0, equals 4.

What grade are you in? That might help me give you a better explanation, or figure out if I can give you one at all.

This is just grade-school arithmetic. Work backwards from the result to find the starting point:

i) You ended up with 10. What did you do in order to get that 10? Undo this. (Hint: You multiplied something by 3, so divide to find the fraction which is the "something".)

ii) To obtain the value in (i), what did you? Undo this. (Hint: You added, so subtract.)

Note: The second exercise, as currently posted, is invalid. You cannot multiply something by zero and end up with 4, or with anything else other than zero.

Unless what is meant is: 4 + 2*0 = 4
