I am a bit rusty at math so please bear with me. I need to figure out the percentage of overtime hours for a spreadsheet application. The way i figure it should be is like this: There are 400 regular hours scheduled and we added 80 hours of overtime. My thinking is that we add 400 and 80 to get 480. We then divide 80 by 480 to get 17%. My wife thinks that we simply divide 80 by 400 to get 20%. Which way is correct?

Both are correct - depending on how state it.

If you say 20% overtime compared to regular time - you are correct.

If you say 17% overtime compared to total time - you are correct.
