linear equations: is x/4 - y/2 = 1 a linear equation?

I believe it is the same as 1/4x-1/3y = 1 and the answer is yes, it is a linear equation.

As long as x and y has only power of one ( no square or cube or square root or cube root, etc.) and they are not multiplied with each other ( i.e. no xy term) - then the equation is linear. You can extend this interpretation to any number of dimensions (x, y, z, etc.).
