Ok guys here's the question: Last year Grnadpa Jones had a small square garden. This year he has a square garden that is 112 square feet larger is area. Each side of the new garden is 2 feet longer than triple each side of the old garden. Find the dimensions of each garden.

Here's what I have so far:
(can anyone please tell me how to type in sub subscipt!

(3x+2) to the 2nd=112x to the
(3x+2)(3x+2)=112x to the 2
8x to the 2 + 12x - 108=0
4(2x to the 2+3x-27)=0
4(2x to the 2 - 4x - 7x - 27) =0
2x(x-2)-7(x-4)=0??????
something not right here
HELP
thanks

You're kinda close...your work is kinda hard to follow....

First, to keep teacher in good mood(!), EXPLAIN your variables:
Let original sides = x ; then original area = x^2 (use ^ instead of "to the 2")
New sides = 3x + 2 ; new area = x^2 + 112 (not 112x)

(3x + 2)^2 = x^2 + 112
9x^2 + 12x + 4 = x^2 + 112
8x^2 + 12x - 108 = 0 ; divide by 4:
2x^2 + 3x - 27 = 0

Take over, Rover...

thanks a lot sorry about the bad equation writing im new at this!

\(\displaystyle 2x^2 \ - \ 6x \ + \ 9x \ - \ 27 \ = \ 0\)

Just a suggestion Julia; try to also write with proper punctuation; often teacher will give an extra mark!
