?"30 stamps are worth a total of $8.66. Some of the stamps are worth 32¢ each and the rest are worth 23¢ each. How many of the stamps are worth 32¢ each?"

My work:
x+y=30, .32x+.23y=8.66
y=30-x, .32x+.23(30-x)=8.66
.09x=1.76
x=19.56 stamps, which doesn't make sense, since one cannot have 19.56 stamps.
I cannot figure out what the heck I am doing wrong.
Many, many apologies if I am missing something really obvious.
Thank you

You misssed the most important part! WRITE DOWN clear and concise definitions of your variables.

x = number of 32¢ stamps
y = number of 23¢ stamps

Next, you failed to finish with confidence. Check you work and make sure you have no error. Your work is fine. The problem statement is the problem. Maybe they meant 31 stamps.

Good work.
