Hi
I have a problem as given below. Can anyone please explain what formula or method to be applied to find the answer.

If x + (1/x) = 3 , then find the value for x2 + (1/x2)

Thank you

thanks for the response. yes, that hint helped.

it would give x2 + 2 + (1/x2)=32

simplified x2 + (1/x2) = 9 - 2
x2 + (1/x2) = 7

Is it correct?

Hint: What do you get if you square both sides of the original equation?

That's a great hint, Ms. Purplemath!

I would have jumped immediately into solving the original equation for x, followed by substitutions (and checking) with the other expression.

In this exercise, pattern recognition is easier and faster. :D
