Fantastic friend surrounds signpost bird! (10)

Hint: contains more than one 'e'
:D

I interpret "signpost bird" as "sign" post "bird" (i.e., post is position indicator: HEN OMEN)

Do I have grounds for an acquittal? ;)

It was a tricky afterthought.

Here's one that's straightforward ;)

Without nostrils initially held back, reindeer sound more like oboes! (7)

Cheers

"sound more like oboes!" = direct

"Without" = removal indicator

"nostrils initially" = N

"held back," = reversal indicator

"reindeer" = reversal fodder

answer = REEDIER

:cool:

I think your direct is kinda iffy

Could be!! :)

reedier means more THAN

should be "reindeer soundS more"

I used "more like" versus "more than". Not the same?

Reindeer is plural; I chose verb conjugation "sound" to agree with plural subject.

For your consideration:

Choir Master: "The new baritone voices sound like clarinets!"

Holy Father: "I think they're reedier."

Would there be a difference, were the Holy Father to reply with
"I think they sound more like oboes" instead?

(The corner is acceptable to me, regardless.)

You get 80% for the charade, but 32.75% for the direct

So that's 112.75%, yes? Woo hoo! ;)

1 reindeer is called a reindeer. Whadda ya think 'bout:

deer … salmon … moose … buffalo … fish … sheep … zebra … snipe … bison … elk … walrus … fox … gnu … teal … vicuna … grouse … rhinoceros … trout … wallaby … swine … mackerel … quail … eel … horse …

Some of those are weird.

I'll spend the night in the corner, for the 32.75%.
