Can anyone help me prove these two functions are equal? I can do it by putting them equal to eachother and rearranging to get zero but I am not sure this counts as proof and seems a little like cheating.

A good way in general is to show that their difference is zero.
Another way is to simplify one side and make it equal to the other, just as you would do with a trig identity, if you've done those. For example, you might start with the RHS and multiply numerator and denominator by the same thing to make it look like the LHS. This will work very quickly.
