You're flying from Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM to an undisclosed location 73 km south and 167km east. Mt. Rainier is located approximately 56 km east and 40km south of JBLM. If you are flying at a constant speed of 800 km/hr, how long after you depart JBLM will you be closest to Mt. Rainier?

Start with a diagram. Place JBLM at the origin and locate the other points. Have you done that? What could you do next?

After you show your drawing, the next step depends on what techniques you have learned, so we really need some context. This is a large part of the reason we ask you to show work and ask specific questions:

Among possible methods I can think of are using calculus to minimize a distance function; using geometry or trigonometry to find a perpendicular; using vectors to project the point on the line; ... . You'll have to tell us if you know any of those things, or if some particular topic has just been taught that might be useful.
