A Grocer combined walnuts that cost $2.60 per pound, and cashews that cost $3.50 per pound, with 20 lb of peanuts that cost $2.00 per pound. Find the amount of walnuts and the amount of cashews used to make a 50-pound mixture costing $2.72 per pound.

Ok...please show us what you have done so far.

Have you defined a variable or variables to represent quantities mentioned in the problem that are unknown?

We'd like to see your thoughts!

I figured it out, it took awhile.

$2 (20)+2.60x+3.50(30-x)=2.72(50)

40+2.6x+105-3.5x=136
2.6x-3.5x+145=136
-.9x=136-145
-.9x=-9
x=-9/-.9

x equals ten pounds of walnuts
30-10= 20 pounds of cashews

is that correct?

Continue working mixture exercises, until it does not take "awhile". 8-)

x equals ten pounds of walnuts

30-10= 20 pounds of cashews

is that correct ?

You can check these values yourself, ya know.

I mean, are the following two sums true (total weight in pounds AND total value in dollars) ?

10 lbs @ $2.60 per pound

PLUS

20 lbs @ $3.50 per pound

PLUS

20 lbs @ $2.00 per pound

ALL ADD UP TO

50 lbs @ $2.72 per pound

By the way, you still have not defined your variable.

Explicitly stating the meaning of your symbol x should be the very first line of your work.

Cheers ~ Mark
