Hi all,

I would like help getting from 'original' to 'simplified'. The nature of the question is to find the adjacent for proj,v, U.

I'm having trouble simplifying this fraction, unsure where to start. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you very much

Okay. To clear up some of the extraneous junk:

Let a = ||v|| and b = ||u||. Your problem is now
[math]\dfrac{ \dfrac{ \vec{u} \cdot \vec{v}}{a^2} a}{b}[/math]
What happens in the numerator?

Note that \(\displaystyle \dfrac {\frac{a}{b}}{c}=\dfrac{a}{bc}\)

Proof: \(\displaystyle \frac {\frac{a}{b}}{c} = \frac {\frac{a}{b}}{c}*\dfrac{b}{b} = \dfrac{a}{bc}\)

Thank you both,

I haven't practised math for awhile and I started an algebra course on Monday. I came to it with a fresh head this morning following your help and it clicked straight away.
