I am sorry, first time that I posted a question I was not sure if it was posted.

You should express x using a and b

Then you can take the square root of your last line and use it to write a quadratic equation in x, which can be solved easily by the quadratic formula (though it won't be pretty).

What you have done already is a very nice trick.
