Archimedes stated that "The ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter is less than 3 1/7 (= 22/7) but greater than 3 10/71 ( = 223/71)."
 
Found mathematically rather than by measurement. Not bad considering it was around 250BC.

That link was to Wiki. I don't Know what happened!

Those "waskaly" Greeks were something else. I think one of the greatest example of thinking out of the box (and merging measurement with theory) was the estimation of radius of earth from measuring shadows.

Wait. The Earth was proven to be round by the Greeks? I thought Columbus did that...
