Write an equation in slope-intercept form of a line with the following characteristics: parallel to the graph of x + y = 6 and passing through the point at (1, -4).

1 - (-4) = 5

Is this right?
 
Remember that slope intercept is the form

where b is the y-intercept and m is the slope.

You have a point, (1,-4)

The "parallel" part gives the slope:
x + y = 6
y = -x + 6 <== Slope-Intercept Form

Parallel lines have the same slope, so you have the Slope, -1

You have a point and a slope. Use the Point-Slope form to get an equation of the line.

y+4 = -1*(x-1)
Simplify
y+4 = -x+1
Solve for 'y' to get Slope-Intercept Form
y = -x - 3

Check: -4 = -(1) - 3 ??
-4 = -4 -- Check!!
