how can I solve the equation by first eliminating the fractions
x/2-x/3=5

What is the common denominator? Multiply through by that to clear the denominators and get rid of the fractions.

Answer:

x/2 - x/3 =5
6(x/2 - x/3) =(5)6 multiply both sides by 6(LCD) to clear the fractions
= 3x - 2x = 30 subtract like terms
x = 30
