Please help us, my daughters teacher did not explain. I had a chemotherapy treatment today and my brain is not functioning well enough to help her :?

5x/6 - (3-2x)/8 = 4x-3/12

Thank You

5x/6 - (3-2x)/8 = 4x-3/12

assume you need to solve for x

(5x/6) - (3-2x)/8 = 4x-(3/12 )
is this the corrct problem --note the last part

maybe I should have typed the last part as

(4x-3)/12 The 4x-3 is all over 12

Sorry for the confusion, chemobrain :shock:

5x/6 - (3-2x)/8 = (4x-3)/12

ok --multipy all items by 8 (gets rid of the fraction)

8(5x/6) - 8 (3-2x)/8 =8(4x-3)/12

20x/3 - (3-2x) = 2(4x-3)/3

20x/3 -3 +2x = (8x-6)/3

multiply all items by 3 to get id of the other fraction

3(20x)/3 -3(3) +3(2x) =3(8x-6)/3

20x -9 +6x = 8x-6

20x +6x -8x =9-6

and keep going.........

So we have: 5x/6 - (3-2x)/8 = (4x-3)/12
Multiply through by 24:
20x - 9 + 6x = 8x - 6
Now solve:
20x + 6x - 8x = 9 - 6
18x = 3
x = 3/18 = 1/6

Why multiply by 24? 24 is lowest number that 6,8 and 12 divide into.

How did I get, as example, 20x? 5x/6 * 24 = 5x * 4 = 20x.

Clear?
