"A passenger train travels at 60 mph and a freight travels at 40 moh. It takes the passenger train 1.5 less hours time to cover the same distance as the freight train. How long does it take it train to make the trip?

How do we set this up algebraically??";

You name stuff.

P = Hours for Passenger Train to make the trip.
F = Hours for Freight Train to make the trip.

P + 1.5 hr = F

Distance = Rate * Time <== You should know this.

Passenger Train
Trip = 60 mph * P

Freight Train
Trip = 40 mph * F = 40 mph * (P + 1.5 hr)

Now what?
