Number One Thing to Do -- Name Stuff!!

Name what? What does it want? "How far did jan drive?" Great, name that.

x = How far Jan drove.

"(1) Brenda drove three times as far as Jan" That's (3*x)
"(2)Brenda drove 24 miles more than Jan" That's (x + 24)

So 3*x = x+24

Can you finish?

i think that i can but just to make sure let me do it here.

3x=x+24

so you have to take the 3 over to the other side so that it looks like this right
x=x+24/3

is that right?

No good. It MAY be okay, but I can't quite tell.

If you REALLY mean x+24/3, then, No.
If you mean (x+24)/3, then you're OK, but you haven't gotten anywhere.

3x=x+24
Subtract x from both sides
3x - x = x - x + 24
2x = 24
Divide by 2
(2x)/2 = 24/2
x = 12
