Bill drove from Ajax to Bixby at an average speed of 50 mph. On the way back, he drove 60 mph. The total trip took 4.4 hours of driving time. Find the distance between both cities.

Need help getting started with this one please?

Use the uniform-rate formula.

. . . . .going:
. . . . .distance: d
. . . . .rate: 50
. . . . .time: d/50

. . . . .coming:
. . . . .distance: d
. . . . .rate: 60
. . . . .time: d/60

. . . . .total time: d/50 + d/60 = 4.4

Solve for the distance "d".

So it would be like this?

d/50 + d/60 = 4.4

300d/50 + 300d/60 = 4.4(300)

6d + 5d = 1320

11d= 1320

d=120

To check the answer to any "solving" problem, plug the solution back into the original problem. if it "works", then the solution is likely valid.
