Ok, you gave us the problem; what are your few questions?

Pick a variable for the "smaller" number.

Subtract this variable from 45; the result is an expression for the "greater" number.

Write, in terms of the variable, something that stands for "five times the smaller".

Write, in terms of the expression, a new expression for "twice the greater".

You have:

. . . . .(five times the smaller) is (twice the greater) less (six)

Translate the above sentence into an equation, and solve. Back-solve for the two numbers.

Eliz.

P.S. The other tutor's question is valid, by the way. If you don't say where you're having trouble, it's hard to know where you're wanting help, and can give the impression that you're just wanting somebody to do your homework for you (which has been a bit of a problem, here of late). Just FYI. :D

let 45 = x + y

where x is the smaller number

then

5x + 6 = 2y

then solve these equations.

Where does the 45 go?
Please review the step-by-step instructions, provided earlier, which said, in part:

The 45 would go there.
