Solving a word problem with Distance formula ...

Question:

One house is 12 miles east of a school. Another house is 9 miles north of the school. How far apart from each other are the houses ?


I usually know how to do these problems, but it didn't give me enough points. How would I go by doing this ? Thanks.
 
You havea right triangle with legs of 9 and 12. Find the hypotenuse.
