my daughter is having problems with fractions. the problem is:
1/16 + 1/2. :p

Make them "like" denominators.

1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 = 8/16

Look up "Least Common Denominator". It is a necessary concept.

My answer

1/16 + 1/2.

What I usually do is the following

1/16 + 1/2 = 2 + 16/32 = 18/32 = 9/16.

I hope you followed that.

your "2 + 16/32" is incorrect americo; should be (2 + 16) / 32

My Answer

Problem:

1/16 + 1/2

Solution step by step:

Step 1: 1/2x8 + 1x8/2x8
Step 2: 1/16 + 8/16
Final Step: 9/16

Pretty good, except for the ambiguous notation.

Your second expression says: 1x8/2x8 = \(\displaystyle \L\,1*\frac{8}{2}*8\).

I think that isn't what you intended.
