I feel so dumb. I'm trying to help my sister but I can't remember how to turn this word problem into an equation. Here's the question:

A mixture of animal feed from soy and oats must contain 100 lbs. protein, 20 lbs. fat, and 9 lbs mineral ash.

100lb Soy sack = $20
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 50 lbs protein
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 10 lbs fat
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 8 lbs mineral ash

100lb Oat sack = $10
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 20 lbs. protein
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 5 lbs. fat
. . . . . . . . . . . . .= 1 lb mineral ash

How many sacks of each should be used to satsify the requirements at a minimal cost.

To me it seems like 2 sacks of soy are needed, but I can't express that in an equation. How would that be done?

It might help if your sister posted what she's tried and what method she is expected to use to solve this. (Working through an intermediary who isn't familiar with the terms or techniques is rarely successful, is why I mention this.)

Thank you.

Eliz.
