Solving Linear Equations

Hi
I need help with linear equations involving fractions.

2x/3 -x/4 =5
 
A good first step would be to multiply through by the common denominator, thus getting rid of all of the fractions.

If you get stuck after that, please reply showing all of your steps.

2x/3 - x/4 =5

12 common denominator

2x/3 =3 divide 12 = 4 then 4multiply 2x =8x

Now 4 divide 12 = 3 then mulyiply 3 times x= 3x
Now 5 multiply 12 = 60

Then I have the following

8x - 3x=60

5x=60
DIVIDE
5 5
x=12

This is my thought process.

To verify your answer, plug it back into the original equation, like this:

. . . . .2x/3 - x/4 = 5

. . . . .2[12]/3 - [12]/4 ?=? 5

. . . . .24/3 - 12/4 ?=? 5

. . . . .8 - 3 ?=? 5

. . . . .5 = 5

Since the solution "checks", it is correct. Good work!
