I ran into difficulty with this math problem:

According to 20th report of the International Commision on Whaling, the number of fin whales in the Antartctic during the period 1958-1963 was given by:

. . .N = -17,400t + 151,000 for 0 < t < 5

where t = 0 corresponds to January 1958, t = 1 corresponds to January 1959 and so on.

a) According to this equation, how many fin whales would there be left in April 1960?

I don't know how they figured out "9/4" for t.

t = 0 -- 1/1/1958
t = 1 -- 1/1/1959
t = 2 -- 1/1/1960
t = 3 -- 1/1/1961

t = 2½ -- 7/1/1960
t = 2¼ -- 4/1/1960

2¼ = 9/4
