1) 90% is 80% percent of what number?

2) What number is 7% of 200?

How would you work these percent problems? My instrutor would use proportions; l would multiply. What would you all do to solve for x?

Thank you!

I assume you mean 90 and not 90%

80x/100 = 90

70(200)/100 = x

1) 90% is 80% percent of what number?

2) What number is 7% of 200?

If you really did mean to say 90% is 80% of what number [90% = 80%(x)], you could find that number by solving for x in this equation:

90/100 = 80(x)/100

As 80% = 80/100 = 0.8 and 90% = 90/100 = 0.9, an alternative (but equivalent) equation is:

0.9 = 0.8x

Also, what number is 7% of 200 [x = 7%(200)] leads to the equation:

x = 7(200)/100

As 7% = 7/100 = 0.07, an equivalent equation for this second problem is:

x = 0.07(200)

In this case, x =14. (Not the 140 you would calculate for x based on the previous post.)
