A homeowner is selling his house. He must pay 6% of the selling prices to his real estate agent after the house is sold. To the nearest dollar, what must be the selling price of her house to have at least $120,000 after the real estate agent has been paid?

i) Pick a variable for the needed value.

ii) Write an expression, in terms of the variable in (i), for "six percent of" this value.

iii) Write an expression, in terms of (i) and (ii), for "the value, less six percent of the value". Simplify.

iv) Write an inequality, in terms of (iii), for "no less than 120000".

v) Solve the inequality in (iv).

If you get stuck, please reply showing what you have done. Thank you.

Eliz.

BRrrrrr: you can remove the "mystery" from your problem by rewording it:
(s=selling price)
s less 6% of s equals at least 120000
