Here is the problem:

Find a number such that 14 less than twice the number is 66.

I can't even begin to write that out, here's what I got when I did...

"14-2n=66"

I don't think that's right...can someone help me figure out how to do these?

You're almost right.

"14 less than twice the number" translates to:

2n - 14

So:

2n - 14 = 66

2n = 80

n = 40

Check the answer:

Twice this number is 80. 14 less than 80 is 66. Checks!
