word problem: Theatre sold 900 tickets; floor seats were $12

The problem is as follows: A community Theater sold 900 tickets to a play. Floor seats cost $12 each and balcony seats cost $10 each. The total receipts were $9780. How many of each type of ticket were sold?

I have tried: 12x + 10X=9780
900/12=75 900/10=90

I'm not sure where to start with this. Help me please.

What does "x" represent in what you tried? And are "x" and "X" the same?

It is a VERY GOOD THING to tell what each variable represents.

I might do this:

Let b = number of balcony tickets
Let f = number of floor tickets

We know that 900 tickets were sold in all, so
b + f = 900

Floor tickets sold for $12 each. So, "f" floor tickets would bring in 12f dollars.

Balcony tickets sold for $10 each, and "b" balcony tickets would bring in 10b dollars.

We know that the total received for all of the ticket sales was $9780. So,
12f + 10b = 9780

Ok..

You have two equations:

b + f = 900
12f + 10b = 9780

Can you take it from here?
