Ok so, if x = -1

then what is y=x[squared] -3x+1?

My answer keeps coming to 3, but apparently it is 5?

y = x^2 - 3x + 1
y = (-1)^2 - 3(-1) + 1
y = 1 + 3 + 1
y = 5

Be carful of the signs. Remember a negative times a negative is a positive.

Thank you, but
y = (-1)^2 - 3(-1) + 1
y = 1 + 3 + 1

How does the original -1 ^2
suddenly change to 1 in line 2?

And is it +3 because it is -(-3) making it +3?
