Evaluate [(y + 3)2 – 9] ÷ 8 when y = 4.
[(y + 3)2 – 9] ÷ 8
[(4 + 3)2 – 9] ÷ 8
[(7)2 – 9] ÷ 8
[49 – 9] ÷ 8
[40] ÷ 8
40 ÷ 8
= 5

:roll: Am I right? Do the brackets mean anything?

You're right if (y + 3)2 means (y + 3) squared;
next time, MAKE SURE you post these like this: (y + 3)^2

Brackets mean you must perform the operations inside the brackets first.
